Manuel is a founding partner at García Barragán Abogados and works in the Corporate, Banking and Finance, Litigation and Arbitration Law departments.
He has more than 60 years of professional experience and his practice focuses on corporate, banking and financial law, trusts, foreign investment, corporate restructuring and bankruptcy, as well as litigation and arbitration. His daily practice includes the negotiation and preparation of contracts of various kinds, both for national and international purposes. He has acted as an expert in Mexican law in trials conducted in courts in some states of the United States of America.
He has advised foreign banks in individual and syndicated contracts with and without specific guarantee and in credit restructuring and for borrowers in such types of contracts, considering in all the above the aspects of Mexican law and applicable foreign law. He has also advised Mexican banks in credit restructuring, as well as maritime companies providing services to Pemex.
He has also served as legal advisor to the Head of the then Department of the Federal District, now Mexico City. He has been an advisor to steering committees of foreign creditors of Mexican companies.
He is registered as an Arbitrator of the National Chamber of Commerce of Mexico City (CANACO), the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the Mexican Arbitration Center (CAM), and the International Centre for Dispute Resolutions (ICDR) and a member of the Mexican Arbitration Institute (IMA).
Education
He holds a law degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico and a Master's degree in Comparative Law from Southern Methodist University.
Educational Activities
In the academic field, he teaches Obligations and Civil Contracts at the Faculty of Law of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, is a lecturer on the International Contracts module in the Postgraduate Course in International Business at the Escuela Libre de Derecho, and lecturer on the International Contracts and International Commercial Arbitration Module in the Diploma in International Contracts at the National Bank of Foreign Trade.
